If the Naipaul bio qualifies, then what about Netherland, which I am quite sure was better by far than everything else on the list?<BR/>And perhaps a simple and admirable resolution Antilles might adopt in the New year would be to stop talking down to its "dear readers"?

Reading French's biography of Naipaul, one thing that struck me (other than Naipaul having lived not that far from me in London when I was a boy), was Naipaul asking Lloyd Reckord if he knew any fast women. That's a seriously arresting image.<BR/><BR/>I note that Naipaul's long-time editor at André Deutsch, Diana Athill, got the OBE for services to literature in the New Year's Honours.

When I started reading <I>Half a Life</I> a few weeks ago, and I was struck by the fact that, even as he changed the characters and the setting (at least a little), Naipaul still tells his own story, over and over. Is it a short-term cyclical matter, or is it a matter of a secular cycle? Perhaps the next Hearne, or Mittleholzer, or Naipaul, or Michelle Cliff is waiting in the wings. Or, perhaps, the Anglophone Caribbean novel really is in decline.

Ringtail dove has been endangered for quite a while. So has mountain mullet, which, unlike ringtail dove, I have eaten (prepared by my father). Turtle's seriously endangered (John Maxwell's written about that recently).

I'd recommend <I>The Spoiler's Return</I> in line with Geoff's suggestion, but I think <I>The Mimic Men</I> a better analysis of Caribbean politicians than <I>The Suffrage of Elvira</I>. I'd even recommend <I>Ruler in Hiroona</I> as a classic West Indian political novel.

This novel *deserves* to be all the rage here in the UK. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend, started it and didn't want to put it down. It is a beautifully written, ambitious work, and (for me) a revelation in terms of that part of the world, its people, their history and the literature from that region. It does not read like a first novel. Like Hensher says in the review you pointed
